Canberra District wines scoop the pool in Halliday’s Top 100 NSW Wines
The winemakers of the Canberra District wine region are celebrating the success of their wines in the recently released guide to NSW wines, 2010 NSW Wine UNCOVERED.
19 Canberra District wines have made the list of James Halliday’s Top 100 NSW wines for 2010, published in the guide released last weekend in the Sunday Telegraph.
The district, which includes about 140 vineyards and 35 wineries, was equalled only by the Hunter Valley wine district, which also secured 19 places on the list.
According to CDWIA president Anne Caine, the result cements the Canberra District’s position as a top wine growing and producing region.
“When you compare Canberra, with just 35 wineries, to the Hunter Valley, which has more than 150, it really is an outstanding result,” Anne said.
“And in addition to the 19 wines which were made in Canberra, there were also three wines which made the list that are produced using Canberra District fruit.”
According to Anne, Canberra District wines deliver unique qualities derived from an environment like no other in Australia. The district's vineyards cover a large altitudinal range from 300 to 800 metres, facilitating the production of exquisite, award winning cool climate wines.
“The range in temperature, vineyard elevations, varying soil types and the application of the winemaker’s skill and individual character enables production of a wide range of high quality wines” she said. “Making the list this year were red varietals Shiraz, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Graciano and Cabernet Sauvignon and white varietals Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Gruner Veltliner.
Anne said it was also pleasing to see three Canberra winemakers featured prominently in this year’s major success stories featured in the guide, which not only lists the Halliday’s Top 100 NSW Wines, but showcases each of the 14 wine districts in NSW.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the accolades the Canberra District continues to receive for its wine. It reinforces what we have always known – that we have some of the country’s most dedicated and talented vignerons here, and that our climate and geography do produce truly amazing wine,” said Anne.

Canberra District Wine Industry Association is pleased to announce that 14 Canberra
District premium wines were included in James Halliday‟s NSW Top 100 listing released
today in "NSW Wines Uncovered".
Anne Caine, President of the Canberra District Wine Industry Association said: “This is
a fantastic achievement for Canberra District Wines and is a further testament to the
consistently high quality wines being produced. In fact, the picture is even stronger
when we consider that some of the District‟s highest scoring wines were not included
in the NSW Top 100, due to limited availablity.
